Guitar Arcade on WOWD So far as I can tell, every review of this duo starts with laudits along the lines of, “sounds like that first Palace record (the one backed with Slint) but then trapdoors into a Euro-Synth elevator shaft.” That’s fair enough as far as it goes, but doesn’t get far at relaying the moods and grain that boost this from “woah, cool, yeah” to “as good as anything I heard last year.” Listen to Brass Man. Only thing as beautiful as the horn break is the lifeboat ride en route. Actual Favorite track: Brass Man.

about

"Huron River Eclipse" is effectively Land & Buildings' slow-to-form debut album, similar in tone to lonely morning rain or the stillness of a roadside motel on the long drive through the desert to nowhere. Again the sounds blur between outsider folk songs and careful synth explorations, but there's more depth and dynamic movement than before. The songs were edited to flow in the arc of a solitary journey, moving through an always changing environment without demanding conclusions or closure to the feelings brought up by abandoned gas stations, childhood bedrooms or winding drives down the road that follows the river. Beautiful, sorrowful and understated.
